How to Optimize Product Category Pages
On this video, I’m going to teach you how to update your different category pages for SEO or search engine optimization. To complete the steps you are going to have already chosen keywords that you’re going to optimize each of your product pages around. Thus before you proceed with this video, I strongly recommend you watch my video about keyword research. So if you haven’t watched that video, go ahead and do so now.
The tweaks and modifications that we will be making to our pages are text based so they will mean that Google will like our page more and more likely to rank it for certain keywords.
In the video where I taught you ow to optimize your product pages, I said you have to have a product description that’s at least 400 words long but look at what happened when we do that to a category page, it pushes all our products to the bottom of the page. That is why it isn’t good from a customer’s perspective to add to much text to a page. And Google chooses to rank category pages that have less texts on them.
So in this tutorial, for our category page we are going to add 100 to 150 words. We are going to add LSI keywords to our page. LSI means Latent Semantec Index – which means that you would want to include relevant keywords.
For my coffee mugs, what are the words that best describe these mugs? We can use the word novelty and we’ll call them novelty mugs, you’ll call them unique, these are the type of words you’d expect someone to see someone describe these mugs with. Those are what LSI keywords are, relevant words you’d expect to see if someone is talking about and describing your product.
We’re also going to be doing something new that Google does like to see and that i hypelinking. Google believes that interlinking improves the customer’s experience.
When I write the descriptions, I don’t focus on the features or that they are made from high quality ceramic, those things are nice but I focus on how fun it is to use them. The real reason why customers buy a mug from us is because we appeal to them emotionally and we convinced them that buying that mug is going to improve their life.
We are also going to update the title of the page to be our primary keyword and again Google would like to see that. After that we will then update the meta data of the product category page that we are optimizing. Firs thing we will optimize is the meta title. It’s a piece of code that tells Google what title to show in the Google search results.
Also, we are going to update the meta description. It’s a code on your page that tells Google what description they should show for your page in the Google search results.
We will also be updating the URL of our category pages to include our main keyword in it. After this we’re going to sneak in an image for this, it’s not going to be visible to us but it’s going to be visible to Google. And so we can include an image alt tag for it.
So let me show you how everything is done!
Let’s do the Coffee Mugs category. Remember, on my previous videos we chose a primary keyword for this and it’s “best coffee mug” and so that’s what we’re going to put in the title. Next, we put a description. We don’t want it to be too long because if it’s too long, the page will look really bad. On the description, we would want to have a 100 to 150 words.
I have put our primary keyword in the description. Ad I have put products in the description as well and what we’ll do is to put hyperlinks in them. It’s what we call interlinking. Google would like to see that you are linking pages within your own site. So you go to your product and copy the link address then go back to editing your description and add the link to the product.
I have also included some LSI keywords. I’ve put in some keywords that you will expect to see when describing the mug like novelty, unique. I try to write it to be more engaging and fun. I’m trying to sell why having a unique coffee mug.
Also, you want to ideally max out on the number of products that you have in your category page. One page will have a maximum of 9. You will still be able additional products, but once you over 9 products, you’re category page will be split into two.
Now, let’s go the website SEO. We’ll put a title that is at least 69 words, we do not want to go over 70 as 70 is the maximum words. The most important thing, is to have your primary keyword in the beginning of the title. Try not to reuse words too much, allow yourself to reuse a word only twice.
Then put the description and then on the URL handle, we want to change it to be our keyword.
And now, we’re going to add a collection image. The theme that we’re using doesn’t allow you to see the image but Google will still see it in your website data. Click on Add Image button and choose the image that you want to use. Once it’s uploaded, click on Edit to edit the image alt text. This is the reason why we are adding an image to the site. Type your keyword in the Image alt text box then click Save.
And now, you have successfully optimize your product category page for Google.
